This year your study in English is focused on the study of Language - not the study of grammar and mechanics as you have had in the past, although these are still important, but a study of rhetoric, argument, analysis, and synthesis. With attention to the why and how a writer accomplishes his/her purpose, you will begin to question and think deeply and critically in order to analyze a text and then to compose a response to that text. You should leave this class a better reader and a better writer, a deeper thinker and a deeper questioner. You should be able to dive down to reach the treasures that lie beneath the surface of typical meaning and to reap the prize of our multi-layered and vibrant language!
About your Instructor
I have been teaching English for fourteen years, six have been at White Station High School. Currently, I teach six sections of Advanced Placement English Language and Composition, but I have also taught an array of other English classes such as Pre- AP English, British Literature, American Literature, Contemporary Literature, and Creative Writing. I have taught AP Language for thirteen years, and I continue to love this class. Those "aha" moments and student insights shared in class keep me motivated and energized to find new texts, new methods, and new strategies to teach students to understand and to use intentionally our excellent English language!
